Biosecurity is important for the health and safety of our entire population; both for animals and for humans. Meyer Hatchery takes great care to ensure that our breeding flock barns, hatching facility, and retail spaces have strict biosecurity practices in place to help us all prevent the spread of many communicable diseases that could affect our poultry and ultimately, possibly even ourselves.
Breeder Barns
- Each barn staff member has multiple pairs of boots; each pair having a designated barn and that pair does not leave its assigned building to help prevent cross-contamination.
- Sanitizing footbaths are located inside the entrance of each breeder barn
- Access is limited to only essential personnel
- Visitors are required to complete a log stating the reason for the visit
- Delivery vehicles coming onsite complete a vehicle sanitation process
Chick Hatchery
- Hatching eggs brought over from the breeder barns are sanitized prior to setting
- After each hatch day, hatching rooms and all equipment are sanitized
- Salmonella testing is conducted monthly. Meyer Hatchery is NPIP Salmonella clean and monitored.
- High contact surfaces are cleaned and sanitized on a regular basis.
Retail Store
- No outside animals are allowed into the retail store, not even family pets who may have traveled with you to pick up your chicks.
- Sanitizing footbaths are located at the entrance between the retail store and chick hatchery. The sanitizing solution is changed on a schedule to maintain effectiveness.
- Visitors are required to complete a log if going beyond the retail store into the hatching areas.
- High contact areas such as countertops and floors are cleaned and sanitized on a regular basis.
