Pendulous crop refers to a rare condition where a chicken’s crop becomes overstretched and sags low, often due to retained feed that hasn’t emptied properly.
Cause
A pendulous crop generally develops when the crop becomes chronically stretched or fails to empty. This can result from:
- Repeated overeating or gorging when feed is constantly available, leading to loss of muscle tone.
- Dietary issues, such as feeding long, fibrous material or too many scratch grains, that block normal emptying.
- Crop infections (like sour crop) that impede digestion and crop movement.
- Nerve or muscle damage that prevents proper crop muscle contraction.
- Underlying illnesses slowing digestion (e.g., parasites, reproductive stress, internal infections).
- Genetic predisposition, as some birds may be more prone to weakened crop muscles.
Management
While pendulous crop often cannot be completely cured, there are effective ways to support the bird and manage symptoms:
-
Gentle Crop Massage & Emptying
- Gently massage the crop to help break up the contents.
- In severe cases, a vet may carefully empty the crop, but only with professional oversight to avoid aspiration.
-
Adjust the Diet
- Offer easily digestible feed such as crumble or mash.
- Avoid scratch grains, long grass, or other fibrous treats that may obstruct the crop.
-
Supportive Hydration & Digestive Balance
- Consider adding probiotics to feed or water to encourage healthy microflora.
- Use apple cider vinegar (approx. 1 tbsp per gallon of water) to support digestive balance—but use sparingly and monitor closely.
-
Monitor Health & Provide Nutritional Support
- Isolate the affected bird if necessary to ensure it’s eating and drinking.
- Provide vitamins and electrolytes to maintain the body's condition.
- Monitor body weight and condition over time.
-
Treat Infections or Underlying Disease
- If sour crop or a secondary infection appears, consult a poultry veterinarian for antifungal or antibacterial treatment.
- In extreme or persistent cases, surgical options may be explored with professional guidance.
Note: Pendulous crop is often manageable with consistent care, but long-term monitoring is crucial. Birds may live comfortably with adjustments to diet and handling, though some may decline if weight loss or infections are uncontrolled.
