Extreme heat can cause heat stroke, and heat-induced stress and can also lead to death in some cases. It is important during times of extreme heat to make sure your flock is as comfortable as possible.
Water
The most important thing you can do for your flock is to make sure they have plenty of water. Dehydration can be detrimental and cause a decrease in their laying abilities and other health issues that can lead to death. Place water bowls or containers in a shaded area to help keep the water cooler and allow your flock to hydrate without standing in the blazing hot sun. Depending on the size of your waterer, you may need to make several trips out to the coop to top off or refill waterers on extremely hot days.
Repurpose plastic juice jugs or pop bottles by filling them 3/4 of the way full with water, freeze them, and then once frozen you can take them out to the coop. Placing frozen bottles in your coop area will give your birds something cool to lean against. When the temperatures are soaring you may need to switch out the frozen bottles often.
Cool Treats

Mist
For mature or fully feathered birds you can install a misting station, giving them the option to utilize it on hot days. Be sure there is enough room for them to move away from it if needed.
Chicks
When birds are not fully feathered they are not able to regulate their body temperatures. This is why they need a temperature-controlled brooder until they are fully feathered and ready to move outdoors. When the temperatures rise above the recommended brooder temperature for the birds you are brooding, some adjustments need to be made. The heat lamp or brooder plate will need to be raised or even removed to ensure the brooder temperature is correct. If the temperatures are extreme you may also need to add a fan to the area to provide extra airflow and to keep the area at the correct temperature. But never put a fan directly on the chicks.
Meat Birds
Because meat birds are constantly eating, they tend to be warmer-bodied. Extreme heat can really take its toll on them. You can add fans to their area for additional airflow to help them stay more comfortable. If you are using a tractor system, placing the tractor in a shaded area will help to keep them cooler and out of direct sunlight.
