The crop is the first part of your bird's digestive system, located at the bottom of the neck, just to the right of the breastbone. Food is stored in the crop, where it absorbs beneficial bacteria and lactic acid before it moves along to the gizzard. The crop can expand almost like a balloon to accommodate large meals. In young birds, this can sometimes be alarming but is very common, especially after they arrive at their new home and enjoy their first meal. The crop can hold food for up to 12 hours. If you are concerned about your adult bird's crop, you can withhold food overnight, it should be empty by morning. We do not recommend withholding food overnight for young birds.
