One way to tell which bird is laying which egg is by utilizing food coloring on the chicken's vent.
What you need:
- Q-tips
- Food coloring - one color for each bird, or do in stages
The best time to do this is when everyone has roosted for the evening. You will want to take a picture of each bird with the color or take good notes of who has been assigned what color. Apply a couple of drops of food coloring to the end of a Q-tip and then apply the Q-tip into the vent of the chicken.
When the egg is laid the next day, the food coloring will be on the egg so that you can identify which bird is laying which egg.
Be aware that using red food coloring may cause the other chickens to notice that it looks like blood, which could lead to vent pecking.
