There are many types of shatter-resistant or safety-coated bulbs available on the market, but they can pose a serious health risk for your chickens, especially young chicks. These bulbs usually have a coating made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which makes them shatter-resistant. When heated, this PTFE coating emits toxic fumes that can kill a wide range of poultry.
These shatter-resistant, PTFE-coated bulbs are particularly dangerous for young chicks. Using a safety-coated bulb in your brooder may cause your chicks to die in a surprisingly short amount of time.
Please research any products not specifically listed as safe to use with chickens as thoroughly as possible before using them with your poultry. The heat lamp bulbs we carry on at Meyer Hatchery are free of PTFE and safe to use with your poultry.
