Why Ventilation Matters
Proper ventilation is one of the most important aspects of maintaining a healthy chicken coop. Poultry manure naturally produces high levels of ammonia. Without steady airflow, this irritating gas can build up, harming your flock’s sensitive respiratory systems.
A poorly ventilated coop can also become a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. In winter, trapped moisture increases the risk of frostbite on combs, wattles, and feet. Year-round, ventilation helps maintain a drier, healthier living environment for your birds.
How Much Ventilation Do You Need?
As a general guideline, aim for 1 square foot of ventilation per 10 square feet of coop floor space. This ensures enough fresh air exchange while maintaining a safe, comfortable environment.
Placement Tips
-
Position ventilation openings above the highest roosting level to prevent direct drafts while still allowing air to flow out.
-
Place vents on opposite walls to promote cross-ventilation.
-
Use adjustable vents, windows, or louvered openings so you can regulate airflow seasonally.
-
Always cover vents with hardware cloth to keep predators and pests out.
