Predator prevention is a necessity when building your coop. Fear of predators should not dissuade you from the joys of raising poultry; however, it’s important to understand the threat so you can take appropriate measures to prevent the frustration and heartbreak of losses.

Tips for Keeping Your Flock Safe
-
Elevate your coop 2–3 feet off the ground
This helps protect your flock from predators that like to dig or burrow. It also provides a shady, sheltered area that offers protection from aerial predators. -
Bury a hardware cloth “apron” around the perimeter
Extend 18–24 inches outward and bury hardware cloth around your coop and run to block digging predators. -
Use ¼-inch hardware cloth instead of chicken wire
Chicken wire keeps chickens in, but does little to keep predators out. Hardware cloth with smaller openings keeps out snakes and prevents predators from reaching through. -
Secure hardware cloth with screws and washers
Staples may hold temporarily, but for long-term protection use screws and large fender washers. -
Install predator-proof latches
Raccoons and other clever critters can open simple latches. Use multi-step or locking latches for doors and windows. -
Protect from above
Bird netting or wire over the top of your run helps deter hawks and owls. -
Use motion sensor lights
Bright lights turning on unexpectedly can scare away nighttime visitors. -
Maintain automatic doors
If you use an auto door, check that it closes securely and is timed properly. -
Add electric fencing
Poultry netting or perimeter hot wires provide an extra layer of security. -
Remove temptations
Collect eggs daily and keep your run clean of scraps and spilled feed to avoid attracting pests and predators.
