It is normal for egg production in your flock to slow during the winter months due to decreased daylight hours. Adding light is not mandatory and is a personal choice. Some flock owners like to give their layers a break during that time and others choose to add artificial light to their coops to encourage continuous laying throughout the "darker" months. To encourage continuous laying we suggest making sure your coop has 15 hours of continuous light daily.
Traditional red heat lamps can be a fire hazard. Alternatively, you can use non-heated red light bulbs or solar light options to provide additional light safely.
